Sandburg Model United Nations represents at Lyons Township and in New York

19 delegates attend local competition and 17 travel to Big Apple

Sandburg High School Model United Nations had 19 delegates travel to Lyons Township High School to attend LYMUN I, their inaugural United Nations Conference. With over 25 schools, and 650 delegates in participation, Sandburg delegates made a valiant effort to stand out and bring home some awards for their school. Representing the nations of India, Argentina and Portugal, students from the Security Council to the World Health Organization presented their solutions to problems like Ebola and Global Espionage to best represent their countries ideal world.

In the end, Sandburg Delegates were successful, bringing home two awards. Bill Kolpak won Outstanding Delegate (2nd Place) as India in the World Health Organization. Ryan Lenkiewicz and Darlene Sanchez won an Honorable Mention (3rd Place) as Argentina in the Disarmament and International Security Committee.

The next week, 16 Model UN delegates were in the New York to compete at the largest conference held on the North American continent, NHSMUN. Sandburg delegates represented the Western African nation of Cameroon. A variety of issues were discussed such as Chinese investment in Africa, deforestation, gender equality in the global marketplace, and narcoterrorism. Working together with delegates from around the world, Sandburg worked hard to pass resolutions that would be both comprehensive and valuable to the nations affected.

Sandburg also had the privilege of attending closing ceremonies held in the General Assembly at the United Nations building. Individual awards are not given at this conference, but rather excellent performance is rewarded by having the privilege of speaking at closing. Sandburg delegate Riddhi Patel was selected from the African Union to summarize what her committee accomplished.

Sandburg students had the trip of a lifetime, but now it’s time to prepare for its next conference at Boston College.
