Shepard Welcomes First-Year Students With 'Freshmen Day'

It's all about freshmen for the first day of school Wednesday at Shepard High School.

PALOS HEIGHTS, IL -- Wednesday is the first day of school for freshmen students at Dist. 218 high schools. Freshmen will embark on their high school journeys at Shepard, Richards and Eisenhower high schools. The first-year students will receive a warm welcome when they arrive at their respective schools at 8 a.m.

While many of the students will naturally feel some anxiety, when they walk into Shepard, all will receive a warm welcome. The first day of school includes tours, meetings with administrators and counselors, an abbreviated academic schedule, and an athletics and activities fair. Freshmen will have the chance to walk around the building with an upperclassman.

At one time, freshmen received no orientation before the first day of school. They knew nothing about the building’s layout, or where their classrooms and lockers were located. Dist. 218’s Freshman Day is designed to help freshmen start their high school years on a positive note. This video, taken two years ago, offers a sense of the welcoming spirit Dist. 218 freshmen will discover.
