Suspects Sought In Connection To Trailhead Theft: Police

Credit cards stolen from unlocked car at Cal-Sag Trail were used to purchase liquor at South Loop stores, Palos Park police said.

PALOS PARK, IL — Police are alerting the public to lock their cars when using recreational trails in the forest preserve after a man and woman broke into an unlocked vehicle last Tuesday, Palos Park police said. The two are believed to rung up hundreds of dollars in fraudulent credit card purchases.

Sometime between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m., May 12, police said someone entered an unlocked vehicle parked in the Cal Sag Trail parking area in the 8600 block of Route 83. Police said the car had been rummaged through, with several credit cards reported stolen. The car owner did not realize her cards were stolen until she received an alert about 90 minutes later that someone had used her credit card at a South Loop Binny’s Beverage Mart and a Walgreens.

A store clerk told police that a large female Hispanic accompanied by a thin, smaller Hispanic male in their late teens used the stolen cards to purchases liquor, police said. Working with the Chicago police and west north suburban police departments, Palos Park investigators said the two may be cruising bike and walking trailheads in recreational areas looking for unlocked cards to pilfer from, and then promptly using the stolen credit cards to purchase liquor. The two may be driving a Nexus.
