Watch IHSA Announce Shepard Senior Named Academic All-State

Headed to University of Notre Dame, Nick Martinez one of just 26 seniors in Illinois to earn this honor.

In the video below, Illinois High School Association Assistant Executive Director Stacy Lambert announces the 2014-15 Academic All-State Team.

Just 26 students – 13 boys and 13 girls – earn this recognition annually, and Shepard High School senior Nick Martinez is one of them. Martinez appears in the photo with Shepard student Jessica Makenas during a presentation in an Advanced Placement English course.

Martinez, who will attend the University of Notre Dame, has earned many academic honors, including Illinois State Scholar, National Honor Society membership, and Honors with Distinction, the highest scholastic recognition in District 218. He’s also won many medals with the Shepard speech team, the South Suburban Conference and IHSA regional champion this year.

Criteria for IHSA Academic All-State included:

•A minimum 3.50/4.0 GPA after their 7th semester
•Participate in at least two IHSA-sponsored sports or activities during each of the last two years;
•Outstanding citizenship.
