School Funding Reform Advocates to Hit Area To Override Possible Gov. Veto

Opponents say school funding proposal hurts middle class suburbs. What questions to ask when door knockers come to your door.

What to ask if someone comes knocking on your door this weekend?

This weekend a statewide group and charter school advocates will be coming to the Palos, Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, Hickory Hills and Worth area to garner support for a school funding reform proposal that Governor Rauner is expected to veto. This legislation provides more funding for CPS and much needed help for downstate school districts and some suburban communities. However, the proposal de-prioritizes future State education funding for middle class communities like ours. These groups are looking for 71 votes to override the governor's veto and our area is considered a "swing area" to getting there.

School Funding Questions to Ask:

Find out what's happening in Palosfor free with the latest updates from Patch.

Q - Does SB1 reduce future State education funding for middle class communities? - yes

Q - Does SB1 expect middle class communities to contribute more in local property taxes just because our area already has high property taxes? - yes Does that make sense? - no

Let's say that the State can only invest $150 million in education next year.
Q - How much would my school district get? - zero dollars

Q - How much will this proposal cost the State? - at least 4 billion dollars

Property Tax Relief Questions to Ask:

If they mention that your community would get millions of dollars in property tax relief.

Q - Has any of the budgets introduced so far for next year included any funding to provide property tax relief? - zero dollars

The Most Important Question to Ask:

We often complain that we don't feel like we are represented by the people we elect at the State or Federal level. The reason that statewide groups are coming to our area is that Representative Kelly Burke (under tremendous pressure) voted NO on SB1 and they need her to switch her vote to override a veto. She was well informed about the proposal, understood how it would impact our communities and voted in our best interest.

Q - Isn't this a good thing that my representative learned about a bill prior to voting and voted in the best interest of the area she represents?

Last Question

Does this bill really benefit my community or does it benefit the interest of the groups that knock on your door this weekend?
