📰 News we're reading

• ICE officials take Edgar County business owner into custody (wcia.com) — A Paris restaurant co-owner has been taken into ICE custody, leaving his wife to run their Paris location and an Indiana restaurant while raising four children. Federal officials say he has a long-standing deportation order, while the family pursues immigration relief and a stay of removal. The case highlights how national immigration policy is directly affecting a local business and its employees.

• Eiu students secure teaching residencies across Illinois (jg-tc.com) — Eastern Illinois University is placing teacher residents in classrooms across Illinois for 2026–27, including right here in Paris, giving local schools extra hands and future educators valuable experience. The program spans 24 counties and 90 placements, focusing on high‑need areas like special education, math, science, and elementary teaching while helping districts tackle ongoing teacher shortages statewide.

• EEOC Sues North American Lighting Under the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (eeoc.gov) — North American Lighting, which operates a plant in Paris is being sued by federal civil rights officials who allege the company failed to accommodate pregnant and nursing workers at its Illinois facilities. The EEOC claims some women were denied light-duty work, forced onto unpaid leave, or pushed to quit instead of receiving reasonable accommodations. The agency is seeking damages and court-ordered changes to NAL’s practices.
