Priest Receives St. George Award

Fr. Andrew Liaugminas, who works with youth ministry at Mary Seat of Wisdom parish in Park Ridge, and mentors Scouts studying for religious awards, received a high honor from the Archdiocese Catholic Committee on Scouting.

As hundreds of Boy Scouts and their families looked on at Holy Name Cathedral Jan. 27, Bishop Joseph Perry presented Rev. Andrew Liaugminas with the St. George award.

"I was honored, incredibly," said Liaugminas, associate pastor of Mary Seat of Wisdom Church in Park Ridge, who was at the event along with Scouts from troops associated with the parish.

He works with youth ministry there and mentors Scouts from Troops 3, 76, 50 and 960 in Park Ridge in working on religious awards, among other duties.

The St. George award is one of several religious emblems that Scouts and adult Scout leaders, called Scouters, can earn if they choose to pursue them. While Liaugminas mentors scouts to earn Scouting awards, the St. George award cannot be sought--someone has to nominate a person for it.

Deborah Sitz, chairman of the Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Committee on Scouting, who emceed Sunday afternoon's ceremony, said, "Father Andrew really understands the benefit of the scouter development program. It gives scouters the opportunity to  reflect on how their faith and scouting are related- most scouters are so busy doing things for the boys they rarely get this type of opportunity to recharge themselves to continue to volunteer."

At the Jan. 27 ceremony, Sitz introduced Rev. Liaugminas, 28, originally of Glen Ellyn, Ill., with the following words:

Fr. Andrew is the associate pastor of Mary Seat of Wisdom parish. Fr. Andrew is

the parish liaison for scouting activities. He is a counselor for the Ad Altare Dei

program and facilitator for Pope Pius XII. He has been part of the training staff for

Scouter development.

He serves his parish as Priest liaison to Crux Youth Ministry and young adult

ministry. He is the altar server coordinator. He is also the priest liaison to

religious education and the knights of Columbus and is the vocations contact

person. He works closely with the 8th grade religious classes. He is the Parish

Feast and Festivals leader.

Fr. Andrew is the moderator of the Park Ridge Ministerial Association. He is also

part of the Park Ridge Police Chaplaincy.

His nominator wrote “we have been blessed to have such an excellent

counselor, who both guides and motivates the boys to bring the best of

themselves to their church, their community and their families.”
