State Senate Candidate Mel Thillens Pledges to Support Term Limits

Last week, Mel Thillens signed a pledge vowing to support term limits for state legislators.

Members of the Illinois General Assembly have refused to support term limits for state legislators despite the fact nearly 80% of residents support the initiative. The Illinois legislature can bring a term limits amendment up for a vote at any time. This would put term limits directly on the ballot and let Illinoisans vote on it.

Last week, State Senate Candidate Mel Thillens signed a pledge to support term limits once he’s elected to the Illinois General Assembly. Thillens is running for 28th District State Senate against State Senator Laura Murphy, who was appointed to the seat last fall. The 28th District includes Des Plaines, Elk Grove, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Park Ridge, Roselle, and Schaumburg.

“Mike Madigan was first elected the year I was born. I’m 44 years old. Together, Madigan and Cullerton have been in the state legislature for more than 80 years. These politicians have made careers out of overseeing the destruction of Illinois. I’m not going to make a career out of this. We need a new path forward in Illinois. Term limits are an important and necessary step in the right direction,” Thillens said.

Thillens added, “I’m calling for Republicans and Democrats alike to come together to support term limits. I call on my opponent, State Senator Laura Murphy, to reject her allies, Mike Madigan and John Cullerton, and support term limits for all state legislators.”
