Summit program takes a nostalgic look at popular Italian singers
When Larry Bergnach brings back the music and memories of popular Italian singers on Wednesday, April 15, at 1:30 p.m. at The Summit of Uptown, 10 N. Summit, Park Ridge, he will help you remember Mario Lanza, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Perry Como, Julius La Rosa, Frankie Laine, Vic Damone, and Dean Martin as well as favorites from orchestra leader Guy Lombardo. But will you recall Russ Columbo?
Known as the Bing Crosby of the 30s, Colombo was an American heart throb whose singing and acting career was cut short by a tragic accident when he was just 26 years old. Most famous for his songs You Call It Madness, But I Call It Love, and Prisoner of Love—which has been recorded by Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, Art Tatum, Perry Como, the Ink Spots, Mildred Bailey and Lena Horne—Columbo began his career in entertainment as a violinist when he was just 13. Leaving high school at 17, he traveled with bands around the country and sang and played in numerous nightclubs. At the time of his death, Columbo had just completed work on the film Wake Up and Dream and was on his way to stardom.
Bergnach’s nostalgic look at the careers of Italian singers is just one of the variety of programs and activities presented by The Summit of Uptown. There is no charge for the program, but reservations are required by Friday, April 10, by calling 847-825-1161, ext. 129. Parking is always available in the Uptown City garage across the street.
