Today's riddle: What do you get when you cross an angry cow with an angry sheep? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Tears and cheers at Peoria's airport as 40th Honor Flight returns home (wmbdradio.com) — Dozens of local veterans just returned to Peoria International Airport on the 40th Greater Peoria Honor Flight, greeted by a packed terminal of cheering families, friends, and fellow service members. The free, donation-funded trip gave veterans a full day visiting Washington, D.C. memorials, with organizers already planning future flights for more area veterans to experience the same welcome home.
2. Historic beatification of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen draws pilgrims from across the U.S. and around the world (dioceseofraleigh.org) — Peoria will host nine days of prayer, special Masses, and a hometown festival tied to Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen's historic beatification, drawing pilgrims from across the country to the Cathedral of St. Mary and the Peoria Civic Center. Local Catholics can register for Holy Hours, Masses of Thanksgiving, and the Sheen Awards Gala, or simply enjoy the festival atmosphere around the Spalding Pastoral Center.
3. Man held after alleged gas station shooting in Peoria (centralillinoisproud.com) — A 21-year-old Peoria man is being held in the county jail after a judge ruled he poses a danger following an alleged gas station shooting that left another man likely paralyzed. Prosecutors say video contradicts his self-defense claim in the East McClure Avenue incident, and the case is expected to go before a grand jury before his October 8 court date.
4. Peoria County State's Attorney: Deadly Shooting by Chillicothe police officer justified (centralillinoisproud.com) — Peoria County State's Attorney Jodi Hoos has ruled that a Chillicothe police officer was justified in the February shooting that killed 50-year-old Marvin Martin III of Peoria during a stolen-vehicle stop. Investigators say body-camera and forensic evidence showed Martin fired first at close range, wounding the officer, before the officer returned fire in what Hoos called clear self-defense under Illinois law.
5. Get the scoop on hemp drinks and coming restaurants with PJStar Dining (pjstar.com) — Peoria-area diners can look forward to new options as Los Cabos Cantina & Grill prepares a second location in Washington and several chains and local favorites plan openings or expansions nearby. The newsletter also explains how hemp-derived THC drinks landed on local menus and why looming federal changes could dramatically reshape what's available in area bars and restaurants.
