Longtime ROE26 Leader John Meixner Retires, Passing Torch to Regional Educator with Deep Local Roots
A major leadership transition in west-central Illinois education is drawing attention across the Peoria region.
PEORIA -- A major leadership transition in west-central Illinois education is drawing attention across the Peoria region, as longtime Regional Superintendent John Meixner retires after more than two decades of service shaping schools and student support systems in communities just south and west of the city.
Meixner, who led the Regional Office of Education #26 (ROE26), leaves behind a legacy defined by collaboration, expansion of services, and a deep commitment to rural and small-town school districts spanning Fulton, Hancock, McDonough, and Schuyler counties.
Over the course of his career, Meixner helped transform ROE26 into a critical hub for educational support, overseeing everything from teacher training and compliance to early childhood programs and alternative education pathways. One of his most significant accomplishments came in 2015, when he successfully led the consolidation of two regional offices into a unified ROE26 — streamlining services and strengthening support for districts across the region.

Colleagues say that move not only improved efficiency but also expanded opportunities for students in communities that often face limited resources.
“It has been the honor of my career to serve the students, educators, and families of this region,” Meixner said in announcing his retirement, reflecting a career rooted in public service and local connection.

His departure marks the end of an era, but also the beginning of a new chapter led by someone with equally strong ties to the region.
Dave Demler, who takes over as Regional Superintendent, brings more than 20 years of experience in education — along with deep personal and professional connections to Fulton and Schuyler counties, both located just south and west of Peoria. A native of Fulton County, Demler grew up in Cuba, Illinois, and has spent much of his career working in nearby school systems and regional education leadership roles.
Demler has served as Assistant Regional Superintendent since 2015, working side-by-side with Meixner through the office’s consolidation and expansion. His familiarity with the unique needs of rural districts — including those that interact frequently with Peoria-area resources — positions him well to continue building strong partnerships.
“My focus is to ensure a smooth transition and continue the strong foundation John and our team have built,” Demler said.
For Peoria-area educators and families, the transition underscores the importance of regional collaboration. Many school districts in neighboring counties rely on ROE26 for services that directly impact classrooms, teacher development, and student success.
With Demler stepping into leadership, officials say the goal remains the same: strengthening education systems across west-central Illinois while honoring the legacy of a superintendent who helped shape them for the better.
