📰 News we're reading

1. Peoria Man sentenced to 55 years for Fourth of July murder at former Taft Homes (wmbdradio.com) — A Peoria man has been sentenced to 55 years in prison for a 2022 Fourth of July shooting at the former Taft Homes that killed 19-year-old Quinton Scott, who had tried to break up a fight. A Peoria County judge cited the senseless nature of the killing and evidence including security footage, ballistics, and phone data before imposing the lengthy sentence. The case underscores ongoing concerns about gun violence in Peoria neighborhoods.

2. Peoria City code says landlords must meet heating requirements for tenants (centralillinoisproud.com) — Peoria requires landlords to keep rentals at least 65 degrees by day and 60 at night, and city officials urge tenants to report unsafe conditions. Residents can seek help through the city, Prairie State Legal Services, and an emergency repair program that can fix furnaces or water heaters at no cost if they meet insurance, income, and tax requirements.

3. Building at busy intersection with national tenant sells in Peoria (bnd.com) — A Starbucks-occupied building at 4820 N. University Street in Peoria recently sold for $2.09 million, slightly below its $2.2 million asking price, according to county records. The longtime coffee shop has extended its lease through 2031, with options that could keep it operating at one of the city's busiest intersections for many more years.

4. Weaver Angus Farm May Be Seeing Some Change Soon (centralillinoisproud.com) — Weaver Angus Farm on Peoria's northwest side may soon see zoning changes as the Weaver family considers future uses for 92 of its acres while keeping 22 acres as their home. Family members and city officials say there's no buyer yet, but they're working with nearby neighborhoods and the Planning and Zoning Commission to plan long-term, respectful development.
