Peoria District 150 tabs accountants to finish audits, looks to pass budget next month (wcbu.org) — Peoria Public Schools is bringing in outside accountants to clear a two-year audit backlog so District 150 can finalize its budget by late September. Leaders say the temporary hires, overseen by a high-priced controller, should finish in about two months while the district searches for a new CFO.
   

2. Peoria County State's Attorney's Office determines fatal officer-involved shooting from May in downtown Peoria 'justified' (wmbdradio.com) — Peoria County prosecutors have ruled that a police officer was justified in the May shooting that killed an armed man after he fatally shot a woman near the Four Points by Sheraton downtown. Investigators say evidence showed the officer acted to stop an execution-style killing and protect bystanders in a busy area.
   

3. Dish out the latest food inspections and liquor news with PJStar Dining (pjstar.com) — July health inspections in Peoria turned up issues at several eateries, including a Knoxville Avenue Popeyes cited for training and food-handling problems, while only seven spots had spotless reports. Meanwhile, the Peoria City Council followed the Liquor Commission's lead and denied alcohol sales at two Knoxville Avenue gas stations after police raised concerns.
   

4. Expect delays as Illinois Route 6 ramps undergo resurfacing (centralillinoisproud.com) — If you drive Illinois Route 6 near Peoria, expect short ramp closures and delays starting Sept. 1 as IDOT resurfaces several exits, including Knoxville Avenue. Work will continue Sept. 2 in the opposite direction, so plan extra time or alternate routes around Peoria and Mossville.
   

5. Richwoods, Metamora hope to keep momentum after memorable openers (centralillinoisproud.com) — Richwoods' upset of Peoria High at Peoria Stadium has Knights players talking playoffs, while Metamora is riding momentum after a storm-delayed, late-night win in Sterling. Both teams now turn to big home games Friday, giving Peoria-area fans plenty to watch as the season heats up.
