252 Plainfield District 202 High Schoolers Named AP Scholars

PLAINFIELD, IL — In the past school year, 252 students and graduates from Plainfield District 202 high schools were named Advanced Placement Scholars, receiving an average of 2.7 out of a possible 5 on their exams.

Due to the pandemic, the number of students who took AP exams and their average scored dipped in the 2020-21 school year, officials said. In 2010, the first year that students at all four high schools took AP exams, the district recorded 104 AP Scholars.

AP classes allow high schoolers to take more rigorous, college-level courses in a variety of subjects, which give them college credit if they get a 3 or higher on the exam at the end of the semester. Students who take the classes aren't required to take the exams that go along with them, but most do.

Currently, the district offers 27 AP courses compared to the four available in 2006.

"Not having students in our schools for most of the last school year definitely made it more challenging to support the AP program," Dan McDonnell, director for high school curriculum and instruction, said in a statement. "Because of those extra difficulties we are especially proud of the students who participated last year and congratulate them on their achievement."

AP Scholars are awarded at three levels: scholars, scholars with honor and scholars with distinction. To be a scholar, students — 136 of them this year — have to earn at least a 3 on three or more exams. Scholars with honor have to earn an average of 3.25 on all AP exams and get grades of 3 or higher on four or more exams. This year, the district had 57 honor students and 59 AP Scholars with distinction, which requires an average of 3.5 on all AP exams as well as a 3 or higher on five or more exams.
