312 Tickets Issued In Plainfield Police's Month-Long Enforcement
Plainfield officers stepped up efforts to target distracted driving in April, designated Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

PLAINFIELD, IL — Plainfield police issued a total of 312 tickets during its Distracted Driving Awareness Month this April, officials said Thursday.
The Plainfield Police Department teamed up with more than 200 local law enforcement agencies, including Illinois State Police, to ticket distracted driving, which officials cited as one of the leading causes of crashes.

- 175 hands-free law violations
- 25 failure to wear a seat belt
- 2 violating child passenger safety act
- 51 speeding
- 59 other
In 16 instances, written warnings were issued. Police also made one criminal arrest and two for issues with driver's licenses.

"We strongly enforce traffic laws for one reason — to save lives," police said in a news release. "This increased enforcement was implemented to help motorists avoid the often-deadly consequences of distracted driving with a simple reminder: Drop it and drive."
The distracted driving campaign was funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
