PLAINFIELD, IL — Eight people were able to escape from a burning townhouse Saturday in Plainfield, officials said. The Plainfield Fire Protection District responded to the fire in the 16700 block of Hazelwood Drive around 3 a.m., the district said. Officials said working smoke alarms in the building are credited with alerting residents and allowing them to safely escape.

"The fire caused considerable damage to the end unit townhome and the neighboring townhome had some smoke damage," the Plainfield Fire Protection District stated in a media release. "The unit that had the fire is uninhabitable and the cause of the fire is under investigation."
