Plainfield Woman Back on Her Feet Again After Having New Procedure for Double Hip Implantation

Just days after Corrine Pieroni had double hip replacement surgery, the determined 71-year-old Plainfield waitress was walking around the hospital. Within a few weeks after that, she was back working at a local restaurant again.

Corrine’s recuperation was faster because of a new procedure called the direct anterior approach, which allows the surgeon to reach the hip joint from the front of the hip, as opposed to the side or posterior used in traditional hip surgery. This allows the hip to be replaced without detaching muscle from the pelvis or femur. Consequently, the important gluteal muscles, which play a key role in hip function, are less affected than with traditional hip replacement surgery

“I had heard about this incredible new procedure that allowed for a quicker recuperation,” Corrine explains.  “When I found out how other patients were doing with the anterior approach, I asked the doctor to do both hips, rather than just the one.  Now I have balance, my hips are both dependable and my hips don’t hurt when I wait on tables.  I can’t believe how fast I was able to resume my daily activities.”

Her physician, Dr. Steven Louis, has performed more than 250 successful direct anterior approach procedures on Chicago patients, including many from Plainfield and surrounding communities.

“Nancy was a perfect candidate for this new procedure because she wanted to get back to her active lifestyle as quickly as possible,” Dr. Louis explains.  “This less-invasive approach is much easier on the patient because there is less tissue and muscle damage involved in the surgery.”

When Corrine’s hip instability became unbearable, she scheduled a consultation with Dr. Louis.  When she described her instability and her unusual muscle condition, they discussed the direct anterior approach to hip replacement procedure.

Corrine continues to feel great and enjoys the same, active lifestyle she enjoyed before her hip problems began.  She enjoys her waitressing job and long walks. “I’ve forgotten that I had my hip replaced,” she says.
