Violet Scent Obituary

Violet Scent, 85, a resident of Plainfield, passed away peacefully after a long and courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born May 7, 1925 to James and Ruth Ormsby. Violet is survived by her loving children, Steve (Kathy) Scent, Sandi (the late Larry) Bolton, Kathy (Pat) O'Connell, Debbie (Fred) Darnell and Jodi (Blaine) Waldron; her wonderful grandchildren, Kerri O'Connell, Lieutenant Ryan Pommier, USN, Stephen O'Connell, Kristyn (Chris) Green, Kimmi (Brian) Sorg and Kati Waldron; her cherished great-grandchildren, Kelsi, Kaileigh, Kristyna and Kloe Marion, Kierra and Keegan O'Connell, B.J., Brady and Brennan Sorg and Magnolia Violet Green; her dear brothers, Ted (Ruth) Ormsby and Gerald (Carol) Ormsby; as well as many nieces and nephews and a host of great friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, Russell Scent in 2007, her great-grandson, Jakob Marion, her parents and her sister, Patricia (Norman) Linton.

Violet was raised in Big Rock, IL, graduated from Big Rock High School, where she excelled in scholastics and cheerleading. She was proud to assist the war effort as "Rosie the Riveter" working at Lyon Metal, Aurora making Corsair airplanes. After the war, Violet attended Northern Illinois Teacher's College and began teaching in 1946 at a one-room schoolhouse in rural DeKalb County.

Violet and Russ moved their family to Plainfield in 1950. In 1969, after raising her children, she became a teaching assistant at Central School and for the next 41 years, helped shape the lives of thousands of Plainfield's children. She received many awards over her career and in 2002 received the Award of Excellence from the Plainfield School District. Violet was honored to serve as the Grand Marshall of the 2008 Homecoming Parade.

In addition to her family and teaching career, Violet was a longtime member of the Plainfield United Methodist Church and it's Women's Organizations, the Plainfield Homemakers Homettes, the Plainfield Historical Society and the American Legion Marne Post Ladies Auxiliary.

Meyers, Suite 100, Oak Brook Terrace, IL 60181 would be greatly appreciated.

Visitation will be Friday, February 18, 3:00 - 8:00 PM at the , Plainfield. Funeral Services will be Saturday, February 19, 11:00 AM at the Plainfield United Methodist Church, 15114 S. Illinois St., Plainfield, 60544, with an additional visitation one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will follow at Plainfield Township Cemetery.
