WILL COUNTY, IL — Starting May 2, workers will begin repairing the bridge that carries I-55 traffic over the Kankakee River in Will County, officials announced Monday.

The interstate highway will be reduced to one lane in both directions between River Road and Lorenzo Road. To help drivers, officials at the Illinois Department of Transportation said digital message boards will be installed in advance to display real-time traffic information.

To avoid congestion, drivers can use alternative routes, which include Illinois 47 and I-80.

The project, costing $1.3 million, will consist of bridge deck joint repairs. Officials expect work to be completed in August.

The upcoming project is part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program, which aims to improve more than 3,500 miles of highway and nine million square feet of bridge deck.
