About 30 staff members at Central Elementary School staff members took the ALS ice bucket challenge Tuesday afternoon — including Principal Linda DiLeo and “special guest” Superintendent Lane Abrell.
That staff undertook the challenge in honor of Sandy Fredericks, mother of Central Elementary fourth-grade teacher Nicole Stauffacher. Fredericks was diagnosed with ALS in January 2010 and continues her battle, District 202 said Tuesday.

The challenge is designed to raise awareness and donations for the ALS Association to fight the illness, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Those who are challenged have 24 hours to either document themselves pouring a bucket of ice water of their heads, in addition to donating $10 to benefit ALS research. Those who forego the challenge are urged to donate $100.
On Tuesday, Central staff challenged their counterparts at Lincoln Elementary, Indian Trail Middle School and Plainfield High School - Central Campus, as well as district administrators.
