Driver Cited In 6-Car Pile-Up Off Ridge Road Friday: Plainfield Police

A car failing to slow down at a red light led to a six-car pile up Friday afternoon in Plainfield, police said.

PLAINFIELD, IL — The driver of one car in a six-vehicle pile-up near Ridge and Johnson roads Friday afternoon received a citation for failing to take the necessary steps needed to avoid an accident, according to Plainfield police.

Plainfield police officers and fire crews responded to the scene of the crash around 4:15 p.m. Friday. According to an investigation, the incident began when a black GMC Canyon was waiting to turn left onto Johnson Road from Ridge Road. As cars began lining up at the intersection, a black Ford Fiesta drove up and failed to slow down for stopped traffic, hitting the black Jeep Cherokee that was stopped behind the Canyon and pushing it into southbound traffic, police told Patch.

The Fiesta then hit the rear of the Canyon before it went into a ditch on the east side of the road, according to Commander Anthony Novak.

In the southbound lanes, a GMC Terrain driving on Ridge Road hit the Jeep, which was then pushed into the Canyon.

After the initial collision with the Jeep, police said the GMC Terrain lost control, entering the northbound lane and hitting a Nissan Sentra before coming to rest back in the southbound lane. The Nissan, which stopped abruptly due to the collision, was subsequently rear-ended by a Hyundai Elantra, according to police.
