Expect Major Delays As I-55 Construction Begins In Will County

Overnight lane closures will be required from Weber Road to I-80 on I-55. Work is expected to be completed in November, officials said.

WILL COUNTY, IL — A stretch of I-55 running through Will County, from Weber Road to I-80, will be subject to overnight lane closures starting Thursday.

Major travel delays are expected on the 13.6-mile stretch of road as both north- and southbound lanes will be patched and resurfaced, Illinois Department of Transportation officials said Tuesday.

Overnight lane and partial ramp closures on both sides of I-55 will take place from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays. Closures will also happen from 9 p.m. Fridays to 11 a.m. Saturdays, and from 8 p.m. Saturdays to 11 a.m. Sundays.

At least one lane will remain open in each direction throughout the duration of the project.

Part of Gov. J.B. Pritzker's Rebuilt Illinois Project, construction on the portion of I-55 in Will County is expected to be completed in November, officials said.

"Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time when traveling through this area," officials said in a release. "Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment."
