Grant's Fails to Open for 'Going Out of Business Sale'

Sale was slated for Thursday, but the Republic Avenue business did not open as scheduled.

There could be some more disgruntled customers to add to those who were dismayed when Grant’s Appliances closed in October.

The Joliet-based retailer, which closed abruptly, was scheduled to open Thursday for a “going out of business sale” — but the sale never materialized.

Although signs appeared at the shuttered Republic Avenue business on Wednesday stating the store would re-open on Thursday, customers who arrived looking for bargains were turned away.

Since then, customers have complained of paying for items but not receiving them, and lender Summitbridge Credit Investments IV LLC filed a complaint against the owners of Grant’s and its Joliet properties alleging that the company failed to make $10 million in mortgage payments.

The 90-year-old retailer is undergoing an assignment for the benefit of creditors, which is similar to a bankruptcy, according ot the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.

A complaint against Grant’s filed by a Joliet resident was dismissed on Dec. 1, according to Will County court records. Since the closing, customers have also taken to the Internet to voice complaints about the abrupt closing.
