PLAINFIELD, IL — Plainfield School District 202 is using its first of five emergency days budgeted for the semester on Friday, officials announced Thursday morning.

Tom Hernandez, the district's director of community relations, cited logistical transportation and staffing issues due to a rise in COVID-19 cases among bus drivers as the reason for no school. Students will not attend in-person classes or participate in remote learning.

As a result of the impromptu three-day weekend, Friday's attendance will be made up on May 27, Hernandez said.

"Twelve-month employees and principals will need to report to their respective buildings if possible," he wrote in an email to the community. "District 202 plans to return to in-person learning on Monday, January 10, 2022."

The announcement comes after district officials warned families of delays in transportation on both Wednesday and Thursday. Caused by the high rate of COVID-19 cases, the staffing shortage was expected to improve Thursday, Patch reported.
