Mold Found at Plainfield Academy

Campus closed Friday for the second time this week after a "small amount of mold" was found.

For the second time this week, Plainfield Academy, 23930 W. Lockport St., closed on Friday after mold was found in the building.

The school, home to the districts alternative middle and high school programs, was closed Wednesday but reopened Thursday after the building was inspected by two environmental consultants.

“Another small amount of mold was found today in a single classroom at Plainfield Academy,” Director of Community Relations Tom Hernandez said in an email Thursday night. “Therefore, as a precaution the school will again be closed tomorrow, Friday, September 5, 2014. We are not aware of any related health issues or concerns at this time.”

Hernandez said the mold was found behind a poster hanging on a wall, and so was not seen when the room was inspected a day earlier.

He said the room and adjoining areas would be thoroughly cleaned again Thursday night, “and experts will again test air quality levels throughout the building and re-inspect check other areas of the building over the weekend.”

District officials plan for the campus to reopen on Monday.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and uncertainty this situation has caused for our students, staff and families,” Hernandez said. “We share your frustration. However it is important that we always take these kinds of situations seriously and respond accordingly. The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority.”
