DOWNERS GROVE, IL — A Plainfield man faces DUI charges after police say he drove the wrong way on I-355 in Downers Grove and crashed head-on into another car, injuring a pregnant Burbank woman Easter morning. Marco Alegria, 33, is accused of driving south on northbound I-355 and crashing into the woman's car. The crash forced doctors to induce labor on the woman and left her baby in neo-natal intensive care, authorities say.

According to police, the woman also sustained a fractured leg and a broken ankle and will require surgery on her hip.

Police say the crash took place around 5:30 a.m. near mile marker Butterfield Road. After the crash, Alegria reportedly had a BAC of 0.13.

After the charges, DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said, "Like all alleged DUI cases, the case against Mr. Alegria was 100 percent avoidable. It is quite possible that the defendant’s alleged decision to drive while drunk may have a lifelong impact on both the mother and child."

Alegria is currently being held on $25,000 bond, authorities say. The state reportedly requested a bond of $500,000.
