The event benefits Operation Welcome You Home’s efforts to reach out to local veterans, including wounded warriors.

Last year’s Wounded Warrior 5K drew a record crowd, with around 1,400 people registering for the run/walk.

Funding from the 2014 race allowed Operation Welcome You Home to help fund ActionTracker wheelchairs and a John Deere riding mower for area wounded veterans. Proceeds also allowed the organization to sponsor two nights out for veterans from the Hines VA and a flag pole installation at the DuPage County Vet Center.

Because of the increasing popularity of the event, registration for this year’s 5K is capped at 1,200 people.

Online registration ends at noon on April 30, 2015. Cost is $35 for adults and $25 for children ages 10 and younger before the April 30 deadline, and $40 for adults and $30 for kids after the deadline. For $25, participants can have their personal military hero’s name added to race T-shirts.

Sponsorship opportunities are also available. To become a sponsor, contact 5K Race Director Judi Stapleton at 630-341-1222 or email ww5ksponsor@welcomeyouhome.org.

This year, kids race shirts will be the same Dri Wick limited edition shirts offered to adults. Also new for 2015 will be a live results station, allowing runners to learn their results as soon as they cross the finish line, and finishing medals for all runners and walkers who complete the race.
