Tuning Fork Sessions May Be Magic Cure for Dumping Unwanted Pounds

A therapist at the Wellness Center says the sound waves tell fat cells to hit the road while stimulating muscle growth and boosting metabolism.

When I first heard about zapping cellulite with a tuning fork, I got a mental image of digging forkfuls of flab from my thighs.

It turns out, after Wellness Sanctuary sound therapist Sandy Richards gave me the tuning fork treatment, it’s nothing like that.

Tuning forks, my friends, are nothing like dinner forks. They are two-pronged "acoustic resonators" that musicians use to tune their instruments. They're most commonly used by piano tuners to perfect the pitch of uprights and baby grands.

What does this have to do with cellulite? It’s all in the math, Richards says.

Tuning forks emit perfect sine wave patterns that allow musicians to fine-tune instruments. Tuning fork vibrations affect the body on a cellular level, finding the right frequency to trigger healthy fat cells to “self-terminate,” according to Wellness Sanctuary information.

In a nutshell, a tuning fork used in a treatment tells a healthy fat cell it’s no longer welcome. Therapists say it also stimulates muscle growth and boosts metabolism.

“It’s like scientific magic,” Richards said.

The therapist strikes a fork and holds it near the body part she wants to heal. She knows when that body part is in sync, she said, when she feels a vibration run up her arm and into her face.

I’m not sure what my 45-minute treatment did for my fat cells. But I can testify that as the tones rang through the dim room, I fell into a profound relaxation. I felt like a butterfly pinned to the table; I couldn’t move.

When the therapy was over, I experienced an overall sense of ease and comfort, even though I was going through some very stressful personal developments that day.

And I did feel fit and trim. My muscles still feel tight.

“Are you losing weight?” my husband asked as I dressed that evening.

Hmmm, maybe there's something to this scientific magic.

The treatment goes for an introductory rate of $55. Wellness Sanctuary owner Cathy Baldwin also offers Reiki healing, nutrition planning and life coaching.
