Photographer Anne Dunbar decided to check the nest on the North side of the river and found the Mama Eagle still near her nest high in a Cottonwood tree. Luckily the Mama was resting in the evening and the camera could just barely zoom far enough to make the photo from 300 yards away. She looks healthy and with luck she will be around until January when she will go to the river, find a suitable mate and lead him back to this Prophetstown nest where she has already produced many baby eagles over the past several years. The eagles will mate and she will lay a few eggs that the pair will brood over until they hatch in later part of March, then in April the babies will get strong enough to raise their heads and actively eat the fish the parents bring every day. Eagles grow surprisingly fast, and by mid-June they will be looking full grown. The young eagles will then take their first flights to nearby tree branches and continue flying greater distances every day until they decide to go to new territory, which is usually along the river banks. The best time for viewing eagles is early mornings from sunrise to noon.Then, again in the late afternoon and evening they again are active and fly . Have a look sometime! But, bring some 50 power binoculars or something similar. Good luck, have fun.
