• Rockford man charged with killing 3-month-old after decade-long investigation (mystateline.com) — A Rockford man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the 2015 injuries of a 3‑month‑old who later died, following a lengthy investigation. Authorities say the infant was first taken to the former Rockford Memorial Hospital, and medical experts ultimately concluded the child suffered severe abusive head trauma near the time of the original emergency call.
• Unemployment rates drop in northern Illinois in July (gazettextra.com) — Rockford's unemployment rate fell to 5% in July, improving from 5.8% in June and 6.2% a year earlier, according to new state data. The report shows similar jobless declines across Winnebago and neighboring counties, while statewide and national unemployment also edged down, offering a cautiously positive snapshot of the broader labor market.
