Rockford safety task force analyzes decade of crash data to help prevent pedestrian fatalities (mystateline.com) — Rockford's Pedestrian Safety Task Force has analyzed a decade of local crash data and found about 1,000 bike and pedestrian crashes, including 53 deaths, along key corridors like State, Auburn and 11th streets. Officials are now prioritizing better lighting, sidewalks, crosswalks and lower speeds, with safety upgrades to be rolled out across Rockford over the next several years.

2. Rockford Park District opens $2.8 million Home Base Sports Fields at Lindberg Park (mystateline.com) — The Rockford Park District has opened its new $2.8 million Home Base Sports Fields at Lindberg Park in Loves Park, giving athletes with disabilities two fully accessible baseball diamonds and upgraded amenities. The complex supports Buddy Baseball and All Stars Baseball and will soon host Buddy Flag Football, expanding inclusive sports opportunities for Rockford-area families.

3. Winnebago County jail inmate accused of attacking corrections officer (wifr.com) — A Rockford corrections officer was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after an inmate at the Winnebago County Jail allegedly punched him repeatedly and damaged equipment during a Sunday attack. The inmate, already charged with first-degree murder, now faces additional counts including attempted murder and aggravated battery to a peace officer. Sheriff's officials emphasized support for staff and promised to pursue accountability.

4. Winnebago County Coroner's Office identifies male inmate who died (rrstar.com) — A 57-year-old Rockford man has been identified as the Winnebago County Jail inmate who died after an apparent fall from a second-floor balcony on August 22. Authorities say correctional officers attempted life-saving measures before he was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A preliminary autopsy found he died from blunt head trauma due to the fall.

Free Lifescape Senior Expo coming to Rockford (wifr.com) — Rockford-area seniors and caregivers can explore free health resources, vaccines, wellness checks and more at the Lifescape Senior Expo on Sept. 19 at Rock Valley College's Physical Education Center. The event also features a free farmers market, behavioral health presentations and a keynote on the health benefits of laughter from educator Mary Kay Morrison.
