Duckling Rescue: Romeoville Cops Save Baby Ducks From Sewer

It happened Sunday outside of Jewel-Osco — and it was caught on video.

ROMEOVILLE, IL — Two Romeoville police officers, Alex Escobedo and Daniel Ponzi, came to the rescue of a brood of baby ducklings that had fallen through a manhole cover into a sewer in the Jewel-Osco parking lot on Weber Road. Escobedo responded to the parking lot at around 8:30 a.m. Sunday to find a mama duck nervously pacing with her babies trapped in the sewer. The entire rescue was caught on dash cam video.

Escobedo said he called for help, requesting a net and something to help him remove the manhole cover. Ponzi arrived on the scene with a net and a dog leash, which the officers used to take the cover off before scooping up the baby ducks.

The mama duck stayed close by while the two cops made sure all of the ducklings got out safely.

"Usually animals like that will chase you away and protect their children, but I could tell she wanted our help," Escobedo said.
