'Keep The Wreath Red' In Romeoville

ROMEOVILLE, IL — For the past 27 years, the Romeoville Fire Department has placed a wreath with red lights at each fire station to remind residents about holiday fire safety.

The Romeoville Fire Department gave some safety tips to residents, so they can "keep the wreath red" :

- Unplug holiday lights before going to bed
- Extinguish candles when you leave home or go to bed
- Keep tree and holiday decorations away from heat sources like fireplaces, space heaters, candles and heating ducts.
- If you are using a fireplace: make sure there is a fire screen, only burn seasoned firewood and don't close the damper until the fire is completely out
- Avoid overloading circuits and extension cords
- Keep children and pets away from lit candles
- Test smoke detectors
- Have a fire escape plan
