'Keep The Wreath Red' In Romeoville

Every time there is a holiday-related fire from Dec. 1 to Jan. 1, the department replaces one red bulb with a white bulb.

ROMEOVILLE, IL — For the past 27 years, the Romeoville Fire Department has placed a wreath with red lights at each fire station to remind residents about holiday fire safety.

Every time there is a holiday-related fire from Dec. 1 to Jan. 1, the department replaces one red bulb with a white bulb, the Village website states.

The Romeoville Fire Department gave some safety tips to residents, so they can "keep the wreath red" :

  • Unplug holiday lights before going to bed
  • Extinguish candles when you leave home or go to bed
  • Keep tree and holiday decorations away from heat sources like fireplaces, space heaters, candles and heating ducts.
  • If you are using a fireplace: make sure there is a fire screen, only burn seasoned firewood and don't close the damper until the fire is completely out
  • Avoid overloading circuits and extension cords
  • Keep children and pets away from lit candles
  • Test smoke detectors
  • Have a fire escape plan
