Manley Plan Would Automatically Renew Tax Exemption for Seniors

Rep. Manley's legislation would allow property tax exemptions to renew automatically for seniors across the state

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – To make it easier for seniors to save money on property taxes, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, has introduced legislation that would allow seniors who have qualified for the Senior Citizens Homestead Exemption to not have to reapply for it annually statewide.

“The seniors that have been granted and qualify for an exemption on their property taxes shouldn’t have to file yearly paperwork if they haven’t moved,” Manley said. “Instead of requiring our elderly residents to worry and remember to meet filing deadlines, this plan will give peace of mind and ensure that those who deserve the exemption receive it.”

Manley’s House Bill 2185 removes the need for seniors to reapply for the Senior Citizens Homestead Exemption and instead requires the county assessor to establish procedures to annually verify that the exemption is not granted in error. If a senior moves or passes away, the county would be responsible with mailing a notice to the property’s new owner to notify them of the removal of the exemption.

The money saving Senior Citizens Homestead Exemption is an annual exemption available for Illinois residents age 65 or older who own a single family home and pay property taxes for the residence. While some counties, including Will, have taken action to make the renewal process automatic, Manley’s bill would enable the policy statewide.

“A number of counties have been able to successfully implement an automatic renewal system to make sure that their seniors save money,” Manley said. “It’s time to extend this helpful cost saving idea to all seniors in our state.”
