Metra Rate Hike Takes Effect: How Much It Will Cost You

Service will be reduced as ticket prices will go up for the fourth consecutive year.

Commuters will pay more for Metra tickets starting Feb. 1. Metra has said the increases will help offset a $45 million budget shortfall caused by state funding cuts. Some services will be reduced on Feb. 5 as routes are cut back or eliminated on the North Central line, SouthWest line and Rock Island line. Some weekend trains on the Milwaukee District North line will also be cut.

On the same day the schedule changes take effect, service on the Heritage Corridor line will be improved as the brand-new Romeoville station opens. A ribbon cutting for the new station is set for Friday.

A summary of all route changes is posted on the Metra website. Meanwhile, the following rate increases will take effect Thursday:

  • One-way tickets will increase by 25 cents in all zones
  • 10-ride tickets will increase between $4.25 to $7.75 depending on the zone/length of trip
  • Monthly passes will increase between $9 to $12.50
  • Weekend passes will increase to $10 from $8
  • Reduced fares for seniors and those with disabilities will also increase
