Romeoville Amends Zoning For Cannabis Sales

In the new zoning ordinance for Romeoville, cannabis sales will be a special use for the B-3 (highway shopping) district.

ROMEOVILLE, IL — The Romeoville Village Board approved amending its zoning ordinance concerning cannabis sales at its Wednesday meeting.

The zoning ordinance was last updated in 2020, which permitted cannabis sales as a special use in the M-1, M-2 and P-B districts, Josh Potter, Community Development Director, said during the meeting. The amendment also includes a 500-foot setback from residential areas and 750 feet away from areas like schools and daycares.

"Since that amendment, recreational cannabis sales have become more commonplace across the state," Potter said, adding that most new facilities are in commercial areas.

In the new zoning ordinance for Romeoville, cannabis sales will be a special use for the B-3 (highway regional shopping) district.

"The 500-foot residential setback would be removed; keeping this setback would eliminate most of the properties along the B-3 district corridor," Potter said.

The setback requirements would still be in effect for areas like schools and daycares and other protected uses.

The current allowed areas for cannabis sales are tucked away into business parks, Potter said. With the new allowed use, possible sites would be permitted on Weber Road and some areas of Route 53.

Trustee Dave Richards said everything is a special use, and would need to be reviewed by the Board.

"It doesn't mean that by passing this, it's a free-for-all," Richards said.
