Senior Star at Weber Place Hosts Parkinson's Advisory Panel

Public invited to learn about disease and advancements in treatment and support

ROMEOVILLE, IL (April 21, 2015) Senior Star at Weber Place will host a free Parkinson’s advisory panel at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 27 at 605 South Edward Drive in Romeoville.

Parkinson’s disease is a slowly progressive neurological condition that affects more than one million people in the United States. Approximately 60,000 people are newly diagnosed each year with onset usually occurring in the fifth or sixth decade of life, according to the American Parkinson’s Disease Association (APDA) Handbook.

Panel members will consist of a cross section of individuals who are associated with Parkinson’s disease. Each individual will bring a unique aspect to the discussion. Panelists include two Midwest Chapter APDA board members; a Parkinson’s caregiver; two Senior Star at Weber Place residents who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s, one of whom leads Senior Star’s Parkinson’s support group; a doctorate of physical therapy from Legacy Therapy, which offices at Weber Place; and Senior Star’s Director of Health Services.

Topics covered will include Parkinson’s symptoms and causes, risk factors and complications, tests and diagnosis, treatments and medication, lifestyle remedies, coping and support. “Engaging a panel such as this allows attendees to seek the personal advice and support they otherwise wouldn’t receive from online research,” said Anna Walters, director of health services at Senior Star at Weber Place.

Living with a chronic, progressive disease such as Parkinson’s can take a serious emotional and physical toll not only on those diagnosed with the disease but also their loved ones. The ability to engage local resources for information and support is critical in improving the quality of life for those living with Parkinson’s as well as their families. “Senior Star believes in educating residents, staff and the public about aging well and this includes offering informative lectures and panels on medical issues such as Parkinson’s and the available resources for treatment and support,” said Walters.
