Cross, Frerichs Race Too Close to Call

State Rep. Tom Cross had a narrow lead over State Sen. Michael Frerichs in the race for state treasurer.

Less than 1 percentage point separated Republican State Rep. Tom Cross and Democratic State Sen. Michael Frerichs Wednesday afternoon, making the race for state treasurer too close to call.

Cross stepped down from his position as House Republican Leader to run for treasurer. Current Treasurer Dan Rutherford did not seek re-election, instead launching an unsuccessful bid in the four-way Republican gubernatorial primary.

As of early Wednesday, Cross had 48.3 percent of the vote to Frerichs’ 47.6 percent, according to the Sun Times. Libertarian Matthew Skopek trailed with about 4 percent.

As of late Wednesday afternoon, Frerichs had yet to concede as his campaign waited for thousands of mail-in and provisional ballots to be counted, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Meanwhile, fellow Republican Mark Batinick snagged Cross’ current seat, winning the race against Democrat Moira Dunn to represent the 97th District.
