Joliet Catholic Academy students volunteer for a day of intergenrational games

Students from Joliet Catholic Academy spent the day volunteering with seniors from the Timbers of Shorewood retirement community on Friday, Nov. 22.

The students began the day by helping residents fill Christmas goodie bags that will be handed out to all children who attend the Timbers’ annual Christmas party in December. Students also played structured games with residents, such as Pokeno – a game combination of Poker and Keno (lotto), very similar to Bingo.

“The students were so great with our residents,” said Shelly Goggins, activities director at the Timbers. “Everyone had such a fantastic afternoon with these kids and we would be delighted to welcome them back again.”

Joliet Catholic Academy is a Roman Catholic college preparatory high school for boys and girls, co-sponsored by the Joliet Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate and the Carmelites of the Most Pure Heart of Mary. There are nearly 700 students and more than 21,000 alumni.

The Timbers of Shorewood is a rental retirement community which provides independent and assisted living apartments and a full schedule of activities and services. Residents, whose needs may change, are able to stay in the same place and receive appropriate care.
