Obituary: Robert J. “Bob” Vander Weit
A retired member of the Local 434 and proud US Army Vietnam Veteran with the 101st Airborne Division has passed away at the age of 75.

Robert J. “Bob” Vander Weit, age 75, US Army Vietnam Veteran with the 101st Airborne Division, passed away on March 14, 2024. He was the beloved husband of 39 years to Marsha (nee Grinis); loving father of Denise (Akeem Brown) Andrekus, Deb (Brian) Jennings, Jason (Lenya) Vander Weit, Rebecca (Jacob) Campbell, Katie (Tim) Stoub, Nathan Vander Weit, and Matthew (Leeanna Bautista) Vander Weit; cherished grandfather of 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was the devoted son of the late Abrham and the late Bertha (nee Stob) Vander Weit; dear brother of the late George (the late Bonnie) Vander Weit, the late Marty (Lynda) Vander Weit, Margie (Bill) Bandstra, and Bill (Diane) Vander Weit; fond brother-in-law of Gene (Aurora) Grinis, Terry (Christina) Grinis, and the late Bob Grinis; dear uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Bob was a retired union carpenter and a member of the Local 434. In retirement, he worked in the motor pool at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, where he enjoyed driving disabled veterans to various community events.
Bob was an avid gardener and loved spending time with his grandkids, attending all their games, events, and performances. He was very proud to have been selected for the Chicago Honor Flight in 2022 and to attend the Veteran’s Day celebrations at his grandkids’ schools every year.

Per Bob’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. Inurnment will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery on Friday, June 14, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. where full military honors will be accorded under the auspices of the United States Army and the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Memorial Squad.
