Obituary: Shelby J. Peterson

Loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and friend passes away unexpectedly at the age of 87.

Shelby J. Peterson

Shelby J. Peterson, age 87, of Joliet, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 27, 2023.

Born July 10, 1936 in Joliet, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Martha (Wysocki) Brooks. She married the love of her life, Gordon W. Peterson, and they enjoyed 36 years of marriage prior to his passing March 7, 1989.

Shelby was a homemaker before beginning a career outside the home with the Illinois Department of Public Aid where she worked as a clerk for many years. She was a former member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, and enjoyed being a member of both St. Joseph Church and the Cathedral of St. Raymond Senior groups.

She will be remembered as a loving and caring person who was very devoted to her family. She was especially proud of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-granddaughter.

Surviving are her daughters, Darlene (Mark) Bistry of Shorewood, and Denise (Gary) Clark of Joliet; five grandchildren, Sharon (Ray) Anderson, Kristine (T.J.) Pierson, Melinda Bistry, Ryan (Hillary) Cobden, and Megan (Mitch) Hulbert; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a son-in-law, Clifford Cobden.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Peterson; a daughter, Deborah J. Cobden; and a sister, Joan (Bernie) Yakich.

Visitation for Services for Shelby Peterson will be held Tuesday, January 2, 2024 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road, Joliet. Family and friends are invited to meet at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at 9:00 a.m., to process to Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel for services at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Will County Humane Society would be appreciated.
