Obituary: Theodore Everett “Ted” Sterling

United States Air Force and lifelong Joliet resident passes away at the age of 88.

Theodore Everett “Ted” Sterling

Ted Sterling, age 88 of Joliet, IL, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 with his family by his side. Ted was born on April 21, 1935 in Joliet, IL, to the late Elwood T. and Marguerite (nee Macier) Sterling. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (nee Nelson) Sterling for 66 years; father to one son, Stephen Sterling, two daughters Susan (Larry) Marciniak and Cary (John) Teska; grandfather to seven grandchildren, Amy, Justin, Shayna, Ashley, Emily, Breanna and Tyler; great-grandfather to 15.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Elwood T. and Marguerite E. Sterling; his sister, Marlene June Sterling; and great-grandson, Dylan Olivero.

Ted grew up in Joliet and attended A.O. Marshall Grade School, Joliet Township High School (National Honor Society) and Joliet Jr. College. Ted married the love of his life, Barbara Nelson in 1955 and entered the United States Air Force. He served his country for four years, at an atomic weapons facility for three years and at the Air Force Museum for one year. When he returned from the Air Force in 1959, he was hired by Argonne National Laboratory.

Ted worked at Argonne for 36 years, retiring as Manager of Computer Aided Design and Engineering. He was on the board of directors of the Argonne Credit Union for 10 years serving as chairman for two years. He received the Argonne Pacesetter and Outstanding Performance awards while employed at Argonne. Ted was also on the board of directors of the Chase Lake Condo Association for many years. He enjoyed his many fishing trips to Canada and Florida and researching his family genealogy.

Ted was a wonderful father and papa who was loved by so many. He will truly be missed.

Funeral services for Ted Sterling will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd., Joliet, where visitation will occur from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, where both Ted and his beloved wife Barbara will be interred together.
