Troy Fire Draws Hundreds To Station 2 Sunday: Photo Gallery

A LifeStar helicopter came to the Troy Fire Protection District's open house near Cene's Four Seasons Park.

SHOREWOOD, IL - The Troy Fire Protection District picked a gorgeous day to sponsor a four-hour open house at Fire Station 2 on Seil Road. On Sunday, crews displayed their fire department equipment and conducted safety demonstrations for parents and children alike. Kids got to spray hoses on a simulated fire set up in the parking lot. They also got to hop on the fire rigs and inspect Troy's ambulances. More than one hundred people were on hand around 10 a.m. as firefighters showed how they perform a vehicle extrication.

Troy Fire Chief Andrew Doyle told Patch he was pleased with how Sunday's open house went. Children received free coloring books, stickers, plastic fire helmets and fresh popcorn at the Station 2. "This was the first time we've done this since 2009 or 2010," Chief Doyle said. "We're trying to bring it back and get more involvement in the community."

Troy's fire protection district covers about 18 square miles including Shorewood, Troy Township, parts of Kendall County and portions of Interstate 55 and Interstate 80.

Troy Fire Lt. Phil Morel said the two fire stations are on pace to handle more than 3,000 calls for service this year. Last year, Troy handled 2,827 calls for service, according to a fire department fact sheet. "We had a good amount of activities today, and hopefully we can expand on it next year," Morel told Patch.

At this time of the year, it's imperative for homeowners to make sure smoke detectors are working properly, Morel pointed out. "Typically, there's very few if any fatalities if you have working smoke detectors," he said. "Check your smoke detectors in the spring and fall. They save a lot of lives."
