Voters Reject Troy Township Fire's Property Tax Hike

The Troy Township Fire Protection District was seeking a property tax increase in order to increase the number of firefighter/paramedics.

SHOREWOOD, IL — Troy Township voters in Will County and some voters in Kendall County went to the polls in Tuesday's Illinois Primary to determine whether to increase their property taxes. The Troy Township Fire District's efforts to get a tax increase were defeated by a huge margin.

According to unofficial vote totals, 1,462 voters in Will County supported the tax increase and 2,239 opposed it. In Kendall County, two people voted for it and five against it.

The question put to the voters asked, "Shall the Troy Fire Protection District, Will and Kendall Counties, Illinois, be authorized to levy a new tax for emergency and rescue crews and equipment purposes and have an additional tax of .10% of the equalized assessed value of the taxable property therein extended for such purposes?"

The ballot question noted that for the 2022 levy year, the approximate amount of the additional tax extendable against property containing a single family residence and having a fair market value at the time of the referendum of $100,000 is estimated to be $33.33.
