Skokie Under Flood Watch As Severe Storms Hit Chicagoland

SKOKIE, IL — Skokie is under flood watch as more severe storms are expected to hit the Chicagoland Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service, showers are expected to last until 1 a.m. Thursday, and rain is expected to fall at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas, and wet soil from recent rainfall will increase the chances of flash flooding.

Forecasters warned that creeks and streams may rise out of their banks and underpasses may be flooded.

"A Flood Watch for flash flooding means rapid-onset flooding is possible, but not yet certain, based upon the latest forecasts. Flash flooding is a dangerous situation," the weather service said.

If a flood does occur in your area, officials recommend avoiding contact with floodwater and staying away from flooded areas. If you're caught in a flash flood, try to get to higher ground and stay there.

"Persons with interests along area rivers, creeks, and other waterways should monitor the latest forecasts and be prepared to take action should flooding develop," forecasters said.

Scattered to numerous rainstorms are expected throughout the rest of the week. Temperatures will be in the mid to high 70s before dipping to 58 on Saturday, according to the weather service.

Sunday onward into next week will bring drier weather, forecasters said.
