The Douglas Center Featured on ABC7 Chicago News

Skokie, IL - Rifath Khan, Chief Executive Officer of The Douglas Center was recently interviewed by Karen Meyer of ABC7 Chicago News.  During this interview Ms. Khan provided information on the many programs and services available at The Douglas Center for individuals living with developmental, intellectual and physical disabilities. Ms. Khan focused on the improvement and development that individuals with disabilities make under this type of program and how it empowers people with special needs by providing them with opportunities to live a life of their choice. 

The Karen Meyer “Disability Issues” feature provided an overview of the many areas of opportunities available at The Douglas Center including the Work Center program, Commercial/Industrial Sewing department and the “Art From The Heart” Creations program. Featured in the segment were Program Participants of The Douglas Center taking part in the learning and implementation of numerous vocational skills at a variety of task levels. “It’s wonderful to see that we are able to meet the needs of many people with disabilities,” stated Rifath Khan, CEO. 

One in five Americans has a disability…54 million are caretakers of individuals with disabilities…70% of individuals are not employed and/or may have never been given an opportunity to have meaningful work. “The Douglas Center is committed to raising public awareness of the contributions and skills of workers with disabilities; providing training and employment opportunities and collaborating with the private business sector toward achieving a mutually beneficial partnership,” commented Rifath Khan. 

The Douglas Center provides day programs for individuals with severe developmental, intellectual and physical disabilities. The center offers pre-vocational and vocational training as well as developmental rehabilitation for adults of all ages. The Douglas Center first opened its doors in 1999 under the leadership of Rifath Khan. The center began as a vision to provide individuals with special needs with choices, life skills, employment opportunities, skill-learning choices and an environment conducive and supportive of their ability to function and thrive.  Today, The Douglas Center provides a home away from home for 127 hard working and dedicated individuals. The center’s clinical services, training programs, employment opportunities and Senior’s program enhance the lives of their clients and assist them in reaching their maximum potential.
