Halloween Arson, Neighbor Attack; Old Orchard Exposure: Blotter

Incidents and arrests from the Skokie police blotter from Oct. 26 to Nov. 3.

SKOKIE, IL — The following information comes from the Skokie Police Department as a record of those recently arrested and of incidents reported to the police. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Readers are reminded that everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless their guilt is established beyond a reasonable doubt, and criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced.

INCIDENTS

STOLEN CAR
Someone stole a vehicle from the 9100 block of Lowell Avenue around 4 p.m. on Oct. 27.

CAR BURGLARY/ELUDING
Unidentified men or boys were seen entering a resident's vehicle in the 4400 block of James Drive around 4 a.m. on Oct. 29 and then fled from officers who encountered them.

INDECENT EXPOSURE
An unidentified man exposed his genitals to a child in a lower level bathroom at the Old Orchard Shopping Center near a music school around 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 29. The man was described as between 18 and 30, possibly Filipino or black and about 5 feet, 8 inches tall. He was wearing baggy pants with a black and white checkered pattern.

TRESPASSING/HARASSMENT
A resident in the 5000 block of Greenleaf Street reported that a person who has been harassing their adult daughter for years showed up at the back door around 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 29. The resident wishes to press charges.

HOME BURGLARY
A residential burglary was reported to have taken place in the 4000 block of Cleveland Street between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 30.

HALLOWEEN

  • Gunfire was reported in the 8700 block of Keystone Avenue between 6 a.m. and 6:15 a.m.
  • Around 11:30 a.m. a Niles North High School student punched another student in the face during an argument.
  • A battery was reported in the 9000 block of Lavergne Avenue around 1 p.m.
  • A resident of the 5100 block of Grove was disturbed and/or alarmed by the conduct of a motorist who she confronted about parking illegally in front of her home around 4 p.m.
  • Around 7 p.m., four people set fire to a garbage can in the 8100 block of Kilpatrick Avenue.
  • Around 9:20 p.m. someone threw a molotov cocktail at the southeast corner of Niles North High School, causing a small fire but no damage.
  • An attempted murder took place in the 8900 block of Forestview Road between 10:40 and 11 p.m., no further information was immediately available from police on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

BATTERY
An incident of battery and criminal damage was reported shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 1 in the 3600 block of Touhy Avenue.

WEAPONS/ASSAULT
Around 1:53 p.m. on Nov. 2, a incident of aggravated assault and unlawful use of weapons was reported in the 9100 block of Gross Point Road.

HOME BURGLARY
Someone broke into a house in the 7700 block of Lowell Avenue through the back doors and ransacked the interior between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Nov. 2.

ARRESTS

Emigdia Manzano, 29, of the 500 block of North Lake Street in Grayslake, was arrested around 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 26 in the 7100 block of Carpenter Road and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

James Yoon, 38, of the 5000 block of Greenleaf Street in Skokie, was arrested around 9 p.m. on Oct. 30 and charged with battery, criminal damage to property and criminal trespassing. Police were told he threw a large rock at his neighbor's house, damaging the window. The neighbor opened the door and was allegedly struck by Yoon.

Marin Ghimes, 62, was arrested at the Double Tree Inn, 9599 Skokie Blvd., around 6 p.m. on Oct. 31 and charged with deceptive practices for pretending to be wheelchair-bound and scamming elderly people into paying for his hotel stay. Prosecutors approved a felony charge of theft by deception, and police said he was wanted in Texas and Florida for similar offenses. Read more...

Dustin M. Cullins, 28, of the 5000 block of West Ainslie in Chicago, was arrested around 9 p.m. on Nov. 1 in the 7000 block of Carpenter Road on an active in-state arrest warrant.

Esmeralda I. Rivera, 31, of the 2600 block of Evergreen Avenue in Chicago, was arrested around 4 a.m. on Nov. 3 in the 7800 block of Lincoln Avenue and charged with DUI and driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or above.

Larry E. Caldwell, 59, of the 6900 block of West 69th Street in Chicago, was arrested around 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 and charged with retail theft at a Starbucks in the 5000 block of Dempster Street.
