Jr Klezmer Band at Skokie Theatre March 20 2 pm

With members of the Maxwell St. Klezmer Band

The Junior Klezmer Orchestra’s accomplished Middle and High School musicians have devoted themselves to mastering the art of “Klezmer”—the folk and dance music of the Jews of Eastern Europe.

With selections like Bei Mir Bistu Sheyn and other classics, the JKO presents a program of upbeat and soulful music with skill, talent and infectious enthusiasm.

Klezmer music was the soundtrack the shtetl. The Fiddler on the Roof—he was a klezmer! The student musicians of the Junior Klezmer Orchestra perform this music with fresh enthusiasm. They perform for music festivals, libraries, museums and senior residences in the Chicagoland area, and are returning for an encore performance at Skokie Theatre. The JKO was featured guest artist on WFMT’s “Introductions” in 2010.

Since 1994, Alex Koffman, Lori Lippitz, and members of the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band have passed along traditional Jewish music to young musicians. Many of them have forward with musical careers, including a music director on Broadway, a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, a klezmer band leader in New York, and a Rabbi.
