Man Shot During 4th Of July Carjacking In Skokie: Police

A pair of carjackers confronted a man as he loaded up his SUV in an alley, stealing his car after shooting him once, police said.

SKOKIE, IL — A man was shot during a carjacking in Skokie, shortly before official fireworks shows began Thursday, police said. Officers were dispatched at 8:50 p.m. to an alley in the 8500 block of St. Louis Avenue for a report that a shooting had just occurred. A preliminary investigation into the circumstances of the incident is still underway, police said.

Arriving officers found a man with a gunshot wound, according to a statement from Skokie police. The man explained he had been loading items into his car while it was parked in the alley behind a home when he was confronted by two male carjackers. Police said at least one of carjackers was armed with a handgun.

The man was shot once and the carjackers made off with his car — a 2011 black Ford Escape with an Illinois license plate of 4505786 — in an unspecified direction, according to the statement. No detailed descriptions of the armed robbers were available from police.

Skokie police asked anyone who sees a black 2011 Ford Escape SUV with this license plate to call 911 immediately.

The man, who is not a Skokie resident, was taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said. No information about his condition was available from police Friday morning.
