More than 500 Local Community Members "Embrace the Race" to Support Breast & Ovarian Cancer Patients
5k Race honors former Skokie resident and supports leading-edge research at NorthShore University HealthSystem Kellogg Cancer Center

This past Mother’s Day, 550 members of the North Shore community honored not only their mothers, grandmothers, sisters and spouses, but also every woman who has been affected by ovarian or breast cancer. On Sunday, May 10, runners and walkers laced up their shoes to participate in the fourth annual Embrace the Race 5k Run or Walk in Highland Park, directly supporting ovarian and breast cancer patients and research at NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) Kellogg Cancer Center.
Since its inception in 2012, proceeds from “Embrace the Race” have benefitted NorthShore Kellogg Cancer Center, which offers comprehensive and compassionate care for oncology patients and their families. This year three fundraising teams went above and beyond and donated $7,000 to support leading-edge research and personalized treatment for those with breast and ovarian cancer.
“Breast cancer affects one in eight women in the U. S., and, this year, more than 20,000 women will receive an ovarian cancer diagnosis. My sister battled ovarian cancer for three years,” says Embrace the Race organizer Caren Rudman. “I love putting this event together to honor my sister, to give something back to the team of doctors and nurses at NorthShore who cared for her, and to positively impact the outcomes for current and future patients in our community.”
